Thirsk Races

Experience the Thrill of Thirsk Races

Early Beginnings

Racing in Thirsk is believed to have started in the mid-19th century, with the first recorded races taking place in 1855. The racecourse was established to cater to the growing popularity of horse racing in the region, which was already a significant part of Yorkshire’s sporting culture.

The course itself is a left-handed, oval-shaped flat track approximately 1 mile and 2 furlongs in circumference, with a straight 6-furlong course for sprint races.

The oval shape and relatively short straights make it a track that suits horses with good tactical speed and agility.
